Special Events

Women's Mentoring Luncheon

In the spirit of leadership development, this women's mentoring luncheon is designed to help women in the economic development field understand best practices, current trends and receive support for their career development. This luncheon will seek to foster mentoring relationships between attendees, and the women will hear economic development leaders deliver thoughtful yet brief speeches on issues pertinent to women in economic development. We invite you to attend this luncheon in order to build relationships and support female professionals in the economic development industry.


Early Bird Networking Cocktail Reception

For conference attendees coming early to see Cleveland, there will be an intimate networking reception at the Urban Farmer Restaurant within the Westin Hotel. The event will include a specialty cocktail, choice of a selected wine or beer. A charcuterie board will feature aged cheeses and meats. After the cocktail reception, there will be a 10 minute walking tour that will lead you to one of Cleveland's most popular dining districts, East 4th Street! This is a great opportunity to connect and network with IEDC members!

Sign up to for this creative fun event for one game of bowling that will pair attendees in teams based upon location where they reside (e.g. eastern cities vs. western cities, or northern cities vs. southern cities). Join the golf tournament at Golfweek magazine's #1 ranked municipal course in Ohio and the #14 in America, Sleepy Hollow Golf Course! With its spectacular views of Cuyahoga River Valley and classic layout, Sleepy Hollow Golf Course ranks as one of the great golf challenges in Cleveland. The punitive nature of the course is clearly evident by the deep ravines and 58 bunkers that can come into play on its 18 holes. The greens are clearly the main challenge on many holes.


Volunteer Service Project

To celebrate the IEDC Annual Conference, up to 50 adult volunteers are invited to assist restoration efforts in one of Cleveland Metroparks' largest conservation efforts of an urban watershed. Join your peers as we journey to the Acacia Reservation, a 155- acre green space oasis among a significantly congested area of the City of Lyndhurst.

You'll participate in an informational meeting highlighting the transformation of this unique area from a former golf course to a nature preserve over the next few years.

You'll get to use basic hand tools to restore and increase native habitat. Tasks include installing plants and trees, providing plant care with enclosures to minimize animal browse, and other restoration activities as needed. Participants will be trained and be given a project overview prior to the start of work. These tasks help to address overall water quality issues of Euclid Creek.


IEDC Pre-conference Boot Camp

Start off your IEDC conference right, with a free boot camp provided by the personal trainers of locally based EFS Personal Training right outside of the Cleveland Convention Center. Take in the incredible vistas of Downtown Cleveland and Lake Erie, while being lead in group exercises with fellow IEDC attendees designed to energize and prepare you for the conference's activities and events. Everyone is welcome and encouraged to attend, multiple personal trainers will be in attendance providing activities for all levels of fitness to accommodate all attendees. City of Cleveland will provide local fresh tap water to refresh!


Workshop: BRE: 30 Years of Community Economic Impact

Active business retention & expansion (BRE) programs promote business growth, job creation and healthier economies. Despite widespread use of BRE programs, there has been little research into best practices or how to measure the impact of ongoing BRE programs. This workshop will highlight examples of BRE programs in small, medium and large communities, in addition to regional and state programs. We will explore BRE case studies presented by program representatives, demonstrate new innovations to evaluate BRE programs and offer an interactive roundtable discussion of current BRE best practices.

Workshop: You're on the Board of Directors...Now What?

Board members of economic development organizations expect to play a meaningful role in the success of the organizations they govern. Fully developed boards – in terms of their governing role, structure and processes – that work in close partnership with the CEO benefit both the board of directors and the organization. Participants in this workshop designed specifically for board members will learn how to develop and support a thriving organization, drawing on recent advances in the rapidly changing field of nonprofit governance. This exclusive workshop will feature successful case studies and the opportunity to network with fellow directors from other organizations.

Economic Development Ethics Workshop

Are you faced with ethical dilemmas in your professional life? Do you have the tools to deal with ethical issues? Economic developers regularly encounter situations that require sound judgment and strength of character. This session will provide essential instruction on ethics in economic development and provide you with the tools to foster an environment of high standards in your organization. No theoretical lecture, this workshop will focus on real life ethical decision-making situations faced by economic developers.


Great Cleveland Beer Challenge

Show off the best of your community with the Great Cleveland Beer Challenge. Enter the best beer produced in your community and a panel of judges will do a blind taste test to determine three winners. Deadline to enter is August 16th.

Inaugural LGBT & Friends Reception

The perfect way to cap off the first day of the Annual IEDC Conference is to have an LGBT & Friends gathering on Cleveland's largest rooftop bar at the Azure Lounge located on the 12th floor at The 9.

The reception will include remarks from leaders across our cities that will share their successes with attracting and welcoming LGBT individuals including the local economic impact they have had on their respective communities. Cleveland laid out the “red carpet” to welcome the LGBT community which culminated in the decision for the city being selected to host the 2014 Gay Games. This international event had a $52 million economic impact to the Northeast Ohio region. Come enjoy the panoramic view of Cleveland's vibrant Downtown while sipping a handcrafted cocktail and enjoying light fare.

Primer to the CEcD Exam Process: What you Need to Know Workshop

If you are planning to sit for the Certified Economic Developer (CEcD) exam, it's never too early to start planning and learning more about the process. All participants and attendees at this workshop will be provided with a complete overview of the Certified Economic Developer (CEcD) exam process, from application to the oral examination. Attendees will learn tools and techniques for preparing for the exam and witness a mock oral interview.
