2016 IEDC Annual Conference Sunday Keynote Speaker Spotlight

Toby Cosgrove, M.D.
President & CEO
Cleveland Clinic

Just added to the speaker lineup: CEO, Dr. Cosgrove presides over an $8 billion healthcare system comprised of the Cleveland Clinic, eight community hospitals, 16 family health and ambulatory surgery centers, Cleveland Clinic Florida, the Lou Ruvo Center for Brain Health in Las Vegas, Cleveland Clinic Toronto, and Cleveland Clinic Abu Dhabi. His leadership has emphasized patient care and patient experience, including the re-organization of clinical services into patient-centered, organ and disease-based institutes. He launched major wellness initiatives for patients, employees and communities. Under his leadership, Cleveland Clinic has consistently been named among America's top four hospitals (U.S.News & World Report) and is one of only two hospitals named among "America's 99 Most Ethical Companies" (Ethisphere Institute).

Dr. Cosgrove received his medical degree from the University of Virginia School of Medicine in Charlottesville and completed his clinical training at Massachusetts General Hospital, Boston Children's Hospital, and Brook General Hospital in London. His undergraduate work was at Williams College in Williamstown, Mass. He was a surgeon in the U.S. Air Force and served in Da Nang, Republic of Vietnam, as the Chief of U.S. Air Force Casualty Staging Flight. Under his leadership, Cleveland Clinic's heart program was ranked No. 1 in America for 10 years in a row (U.S.News & World Report). He has published nearly 450 journal articles, book chapters, one book and 17 training and continuing medical education films. He performed more than 22,000 operations and earned an international reputation for expertise in all areas of cardiac surgery, especially valve repair. As an innovator, Dr. Cosgrove has 30 patents filed for developing medical and clinical products used in surgical environments.

This practitioner-driven course uses the case study method to complement current neighborhood development theory. Participants will learn how to identify the major neighborhood actors, their objectives, and strategies for redevelopment, in addition to understanding the process for creating a strategic economic development plan to meet the neighborhood development goals. Specifically, this course will examine social capital (e.g., linkages, networks, talent, etc.), environmental capital (e.g., stewardship, residual management, etc.) and economic capital (e.g., investment and reinvestment) facing distressed neighborhoods and offer solutions to address local needs.

Rodolfo has a Master's degree in Marketing from CETYS University in Mexico. He graduated from The Economic Development Institute of the University Of Oklahoma and from the ESADE (Barcelona, Spain) Small business development program as well as the Lean Launchpad Educators Program from Columbia University and NCIIA. During the last 24 years he has been heavily involved in International Marketing and Economic Development activities.

He headed for several years the Industrial Development Commission of Mexical, during his administration over 600 million dollars were invested in the city of Mexicali.

For conference attendees coming early to see Cleveland, there will be an intimate networking reception at the Urban Farmer Restaurant within the Westin Hotel. The event will include a specialty cocktail, choice of a selected wine or beer. A charcuterie board will feature aged cheeses and meats. After the cocktail reception, there will be a 10 minute walking tour that will lead you to one of Cleveland's most popular dining districts, East 4th Street! This is a great opportunity to connect and network with IEDC members!

Sign up for this creative fun event for one game of bowling that will pair attendees in teams based upon location where they reside (e.g. eastern cities vs. west cities, or northern cities vs. southern cities). The venue provides an electric atmosphere, state-of-the-art bowling alleys, and delicious culinary appetizers in the heart of the City! This will be a highlight to meet new colleagues while reconnecting with old friends.

Volunteer Service Project
Saturday, September 24 | 12:00 pm - 4:00 pm

Price: Free, but registration is required

To celebrate the IEDC Annual Conference, up to 50 adult volunteers are invited to assist restoration efforts in one of Cleveland Metroparks' largest conservation efforts of an urban watershed. Join your peers as we journey to the Acacia Reservation, a 155-acre green space oasis among a significantly congested area of the City of Lyndhurst.

You'll participate in an information meeting highlighting the transformation of this unique area from a former golf course to a nature preserve over the next few years. This event is free, but only open to Conference registrants. See how to participate. Get started now.
